A Kindle book giveaway success story

I am pleased to report that my Kindle book giveaway, orchestrated by Mike O’Mary, my Dream of Things publisher, was a huge success. Scheduled to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day on Monday, September 10, we offered my memoir, Leaving the Hall Light On, as a free download on September 8, 9, and 10.

Downloads were slow at first. Sunday night the total was just 7,200. While I was willing to think that was a good number – what did I know? – Mike thought we should end up with at least 10,000. But we were both wrong. Downloads picked up considerably on the last day, and by the end of the giveaway we had a total of 14,500. Wow! The thought of that many people wanting to read my book is mind-blowing. And the success still goes on. In the three days since the giveaway ended, 200 Kindle editions have sold. As of this writing right now, the statistics are:

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #1,716 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

In the next few days I’ll post about the strategy behind this enormous success. Stay tuned.

Madeline, this is fabulous news! To know that many people downloaded your book is a comforting thought. Whatever form your book is published in, it is a must read by as many people as possible, if perception about Suicide and the Bipolar condition is going to change in the future.

Your biggest fan and supporter for what you write about and stand for..... Knowing you has given me strength and encouragement that has nourished my soul.

Madeline:

I just finished reading your book and wanted to thank you for offering it as a free download. I have struggled as the mother of a son who has suffered from drug addiction for the past five years. I also believe my son suffers from mental illness, although he has not sought help for his depression. I could relate to much in your book. My greatest fear is the death of my son. I wanted you to know who much I appreciated your honesty and openness in sharing the unthinkable.

Dear Lisa, I'm so sorry for what you are going through with your son. I just hope he'll get help for his depression and is able to live a good long normal life.
And I thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts about my book here.
Would you please do me a favor and post your very same words on Amazon? Perhaps you'll encourage others like with similar issues to read the book as well.
I wish you all the best. Madeline
